Featuring Unique Woodworking Designs and Concepts

  • Inspiration for Boards 2 Bowls projects come from a host of existing forms, including but not limited to: pottery and art; boxes featuring unique joinery; Egyptian and Greek bowls, vases, containers, and vessels; architectural design; everyday items from chimneys to wicker baskets; and the works from countless woodworking peers.

Many of the projects blend simple domestic woods such as Walnut, Mahogany, White Ash, Oak, and Maple with striking exotic woods such as Wenge, Padauk, Purpleheart, Yellowheart, Bloodwood, and Tigerwood. On occasion, hardwoods and laminates such as plywood are combined with colored resin to create truly unique structures.

The overarching goal of Board 2 Bowls is to create subtle, yet unique accessories that will adorn a home or workspace and pique your interest. At the end of the day, we are limited only by time, our own imaginations, and occasionally the weather.

  • About

    Paul D. Kaump

    Designer and Builder

I came to woodworking a little later in life than most. Despite watching my father design and build just about anything and everything (including the house I grew up in), I only took up the hobby in 2013 when our new home required custom shelving units. From that point, I've added equipment and tools as my skills and interests expanded.

I would never label myself as an artist as I approach woodworking from a more technical, engineering perspective. I simply try to create forms that are visually appealing – sometimes it works, other times it doesn’t. Regardless, every project offers lessons that are readily applied to future builds.

Part of what intrigues me is the fact that woodworking is virtually boundless while the outcome remains somewhat controllable. Said differently, this hobby is synonymous with problem solving – a puzzle of sorts. As most woodworkers will attest, nearly every project has issues that must be overcome to usher it across the finish line.

When I’m not woodworking, I can be found pursuing my occupation as a portfolio manager and derivatives trader, and business consultant; cycling on the roads of western Minneapolis; tending to our herd of cats; and spending time with my wife, Megan.

My woodworking axiom: "God created it (ref. Genesis 1:11); I merely reshaped it."
